Review: "Edge of Dawn" by Lara Adrian

In this pulse-pounding and thrillingly sensual novel, New York Times bestselling author Lara Adrian returns to the mesmerizing world of the Midnight Breed, following new characters into a dark future where an uneasy peace can unravel into war—and a great betrayal can mask an all-consuming love.

Twenty years after the terror of First Dawn—when mankind learned that vampires lived secretly among them—the threat of violence reigns as the two species struggle to coexist. The only group preserving the fragile harmony is the Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors dedicated to protecting humans and vampires alike. And in this precarious world of torn loyalties and shattered trust, Mira, a fiery squad captain, finds that every fight bears an intensely personal cost.

Raised among the Order, Mira has always believed in the warrior’s code of swift—and even lethal—justice. But the one thing she desires more than the Order’s hard-won acceptance is Kellan Archer, a sexy but troubled Breed fighter. In love with him since childhood, Mira once broke through his tough exterior during an unexpected night of rapture, but the next day he mysteriously disappeared, never to return.

Kellan didn’t think he would ever see Mira again—or have to confront the truth of why he left. After abandoning the Order years ago, he now leads a band of human rebels intent on carrying out their own vigilante rule of law. Yet a high-profile kidnapping assignment brings him face-to-face with the past he sought to avoid, and the striking woman he has tried desperately to forget. And as tensions mount and the risk of bloodshed grows, Kellan and Mira must take sides—between the competing missions that dominate their lives, and the electrifying passion that claims their hearts.

Lara Adrian did an outstanding job flipping the Midnight Breed series on it's head.  After so many books in the series it was at it's peak and instead of trying to carry that out with new characters, the series takes a jump 20 years into the future and we are now following the children of the Breed that were just being born in the last book.  I doubt there are many authors that could have pulled this off so seamlessly.  It was a smooth transition into the new world of characters and we still get to see a little of our old favorites too.

It was amazing to see Mira come into her own finally.  She was a kick-ass heroine even as a kid and she has certainly grown into an amazing warrior.  Mira and Kellan were of course the favorites of the children so far as they were children in the previous books so we've gotten to know them quite well.  The other one I was anxious to meet was Lucan Thorne's child.  I'm sure as leader of the Breed, Lucan's son will have to be one of the biggest baddest warriors of the bunch!

The reunion between Kellan and Mira was heartbreaking throughout most of the story but there was tons of action too, and as usual, amazing character and world building.  The rest of society now knows that the Breed exist which certainly opens it up for some new storylines as well. I was worried about missing all the old characters but the new ones are such strong, well- built characters already in this book that I can see that's not going to be an issue.  Lara Adrian writes some of the most unique, action packed, paranormal romance!  This series has always been in my top 3, but this new story arc and time jump brings it to a whole new level.

Edge of Dawn is scheduled to be released February 26th.

Cover Reveal: "Edge of Dawn" by Lara Adrian

Check out this hot cover for Lara Adrian's upcoming book, "Edge of Dawn!"

This is the 11th book in the "Midnight Breed" series.  It is schedule to be released January 22, 2013 (available for pre-order now).

If you haven't read this series yet, now is the time to catch up.  Lara Adrian has created an amazing world of vampires that is like no other.  This is one of my favorite series and I can't wait for this next novel... it's certainly going to be a game changer!

Twenty years after the Order’s vanquish of their chief adversary, conflicts and skirmishes continue for the Breed, violence escalating toward war. Peace seems elusive, but the Order and their allies will not rest until it is won.

For Mira, raised with the Order from the time she was a child and now the formidable captain of her own team of warriors for the Order, the fight is personal. War has cost her a great deal, though nothing more precious than the life of someone she loved dearly. Vowed to avenge his death, Mira blazes into every battle like a Valkyrie, poised to make her enemies pay. Until an unexpected encounter with a rebel leader brings her face-to-face with a startling truth, and a betrayal that will cut through her every defense . . . straight to the core of the wounded woman whose faith has never been tested more, nor her heart more deeply torn.

Set of Lara Adrian and Gena Showalter bookmarks to one lucky person who comments.  Would love to hear your thoughts on The Midnight Breed series for those of you that have read it.  Especially where you think it will go with the 20 year time jump with this book.

Review: "Darker After Midnight" by Lara Adrian

Darker After Midnight is book #10 in the Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian.

This one starts off right where we left off in the last book.  As Dragos attempts to lead the police directly to the Order's front door, Chase sacrifices himself to protect his brethren.  He's been on the verge of succumbing to bloodlust since his brother and nephew's death but is now teetering precariously close to losing it all to the disease.  While Dragos continues his plot to take over the world, the humans as well as the otherworlders, it's up to the Order to protect humanity.  As a former member of the Order, a group of warriors pledged to protect the Breed as well as the humans, Chase still feels he owes it to them to rid the world of Dragos and his minions.  As Chase continues his battle with bloodlust and finds himself drawn to a beautiful otherworldly woman he hopes to fight off the disease threatening to ruin him and protect her at any cost.

I have never been a fan of Sterling Chase in this series up to this point.  I was hesitant to read this book even though I have loved the series so far.  I knew Lara Adrian would make me love Chase and she did a wonderful job, as usual.  She took Chase to his lowest point, but didn't take him so far over the edge that he wasn't redeemable.  She showed his rough, out of control, intense exterior as well as his vulnerable side.  He couldn't accept himself and what he had become which was a huge hurdle for him to overcome.  The introduction of Tavia Fairchild turns the whole layout of the Breed on its head.  It made some huge changes and it will be interesting to see where they go from here with that.  Also, there are major changes in the ongoing battle with Dragos.  This book is definitely a game changer for the series.  I do wish we would have gotten a little more wrap up at the end however, as the epilogue jumps ahead quite a bit.  Tavia was one of my favorite heroines of the series so far.  We got a lot with the other characters as well.  Especially with Tegan, Lucan and the kids living with the Order.  Overall it was a fantastic book as usual.  It was full of action, suspense, romance... it had it all!
