Review: "Last Kiss Goodnight" by Gena Showalter

Black ops agent Solomon Judah awakens caged and bound in a twisted zoo where other-worlders are the main attraction. Vika Lukas, the owner’s daughter, is tasked with Solo’s care and feeding. The monster inside him yearns to kill her on sight, even though she holds the key to his escape. But the human side of him realizes the beautiful deaf girl is more than she seems - she’s his.

Vika endures the captives’ taunts and loathing, hoping to keep them alive even if she can’t free them. Only, Solo is different - he protects her. But as hostility turns to forbidden romance, his feelings for her will be used against him... and he’ll be put to a killer test.

Last Kiss Goodnight is the first book in Gena's new Otherworld Assassin series.  It had a very different feel to me than most of Gena Showalter's other books.  I did love the setting and premise of the book, it was very original.  The protagonist, Solo, and his fellow team mates were all intriguing.   This is a spin-off of Gena's Alien Huntress series, but everything is clearly laid out and the reader is quickly brought up to speed.   Vika, the circus owner's daughter, left me wanting to shake her!  She is abused by her dark magic wielding father, which includes him rendering her deaf, but even his threats to blind or kill her doesn't prompt her to leave?!  I get that she feels like she doesn't have anywhere to go and doesn't have enough funds to do so, but you would think she would realize nothing could be worse than staying where she is.

The book has a few slow parts but overall was a good read.  Gena Showalter never fails to amaze me with her great series and this one certainly looks promising.  I can't wait to get to find out more about what happened with Solo's friends and this mysterious Dallas that I keep hearing so much about.  A couple negatives with this book is that it didn't have nearly as much sexual tension and steamy scenes as most of her other books and wasn't quite as fast paced.   I suspect that due to the world building in this story that it was destined to be a little slower, like most first books in a series.  I love the original storyline here though and am looking forward to the next book.
